Writers Inspired By Cats: History Tells Us

admin

History’s most significant writers were inspired by cats. Cats have inspired some of history’s greatest writers! Cats have long been a favourite companion of writers and artists, providing comfort, inspiration, and company during hard days at the office.

Many notable authors have written about their feline companions throughout history; some even credit their cats with inspiring their writing. Cats have left a lasting mark on the writing world, from Samuel Johnson’s beloved Hodge to Ernest Hemingway’s polydactyl cats.

“Way down deep, we’re all inspired by the same urges. Cats have the courage to live by them.” Isabel Abdai.

WRITERS INSPIRED BY CATS

Man’s best friend may be a dog, but some of the greatest writers appeared to adore cats! Here are the six cats that  are inspired by literary greats

ELIOT, T.S., AND GINGER

T.S. Eliot was a well-known American-British poet and playwright regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most critical literary personalities. While Eliot was well-known for his literary achievements.

Eliot adopted Ginger, a marmalade-coloured tomcat, in the 1930s. Eliot adored Ginger and was known to send letters to friends and family from the cat’s perspective, displaying his devotion to his feline companion. The character of “Gus: The Theatrical Cat” in Eliot’s book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” was inspired by Ginger.

SAMUEL JOHNSON AND HODGE ARE THE TWO WRITERS INSPIRED BY A CAT.

Dr Samuel Johnson, a prominent 18th-century English writer and lexicographer, was another notable cat owner. Johnson was a well-known cat lover who adored his cat, Hodge. In fact, He frequently purchased Hodge oysters as a treat, considered a premium dish then.

“Dr Johnson enjoyed cuddles with his furry companion and liked to treat him to oysters.”

ERNEST HEMINGWAY AND BOISE ARE THE TWO WRITERS INSPIRED BY A CAT.

It’s no secret that Ernest Hemingway loved cats a lot. Hemingway owned many cats throughout his life, but Minou was one of his favourites. Minou was so beloved by Hemingway that he wrote a poem called “An Ode to a Cat” in her honour.

Cats that Hemingway owned were companions and creative inspiration for his writing. Hemingway’s son Patrick once remarked, “I do not doubt that Hemingway’s cat saved his life. My father was a cat person.

Early in the 1940s, Hemingway settled in Cuba and stayed at Finca Vigia. One of the first cats to live there, named Boise after a US navy ship, became the author’s devoted companion. Later, in his book Islands in the Stream, Hemingway used a cat with the same name that had many similarities to a real-life cat, including a propensity for chasing fruit rats.

BLACKIE AND WILLIAM S. BURROUGH

Another well-known cat owner was an American author and Beat Generation legend William S. Burroughs. Blackie, a cat owned by Burroughs, was his constant companion. Blackie even served as the inspiration for the title of one of his books, “The Cat Inside.” Burroughs was so devoted to cats that he once said, “Cats are an enigmatic species. We are not aware of everything that is going through their minds.”

GAIMAN AND CABAL

The British author of “American Gods” and “Sandman,” Neil Gaiman, also enjoys cats. On his blog, Gaiman frequently writes about his cat Cabal. However, the character with the same name in Gaiman’s book “Neverwhere” was inspired by his cat Tybalt. Tybalt is a talking cat who lives in the sewers beneath London and is a member of the Court of Cats.

In conclusion, cats have long served as a creative inspiration for authors. These furry friends have appeared as muses, friends, and characters in some of the greatest literary works.

Cats have undoubtedly made their mark on the world of literature, whether perched on a desk while their human writes or serve as the inspiration for whole characters and plotlines.
